Background of the study:
Blood donation is a critical component of healthcare, yet community attitudes often determine its prevalence and effectiveness. In Ahoada East Local Government, Rivers State, varying cultural, religious, and social beliefs shape public perceptions of blood donation. While some community members view it as an altruistic act that saves lives, others harbor fears of health risks or hold cultural reservations about the practice (Obi, 2023; Ejem, 2024). Such divergent attitudes can lead to a shortage of available blood for medical emergencies. Recent studies have demonstrated that targeted educational campaigns and community engagement are essential for changing perceptions and improving donation rates (Udo, 2025). This study examines the attitudes towards blood donation within the local community, seeking to understand the factors that motivate or deter potential donors. By evaluating these attitudes, the research aims to identify culturally sensitive strategies that can boost blood donation rates and enhance the overall efficiency of blood transfusion services (Ekene, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
In Ahoada East, negative attitudes and misconceptions about blood donation contribute to chronic shortages of blood for transfusion. Deep-seated fears about personal health risks and cultural taboos discourage community members from donating blood, thereby undermining healthcare delivery during emergencies. The gap in effective communication and educational outreach exacerbates this problem, making it difficult to mobilize sufficient blood donors (Nwosu, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate community attitudes toward blood donation.

  2. To identify factors influencing donor hesitancy and motivation.

  3. To propose culturally tailored strategies to increase blood donation rates.

Research questions:

  1. What are the prevailing attitudes toward blood donation in Ahoada East?

  2. Which socio-cultural factors influence the decision to donate or not donate blood?

  3. How can targeted interventions improve blood donation rates?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Misconceptions about blood donation significantly reduce donor participation.

  2. Socio-cultural factors play a critical role in shaping donation attitudes.

  3. Educational interventions can positively influence blood donation rates.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides insights into the socio-cultural determinants of blood donation, offering recommendations for community-based interventions. It aims to enhance blood transfusion services and improve emergency healthcare outcomes in Ahoada East (Amadi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to analyzing community attitudes toward blood donation within Ahoada East Local Government, focusing on local cultural and social factors.

Definitions of terms:

  • Blood donation: The voluntary process of giving blood for medical use.

  • Community attitudes: Collective perceptions and beliefs held by members of a society.

  • Donor hesitancy: Reluctance or unwillingness to donate blood due to various concerns.
